Here is a position-by-position breakdown, by WAR. 1965: Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, and American League MVP Zoilo Versalles lead the Twins to the pennant.1969: Future Hall-of-Famer Rod Carew leads an offense already featuring Harmon Killebrew and Tony Oliva.1987: Homegrown stars Kirby Puckett and Kent Hrbek are joined by sluggers Gary Gaetti and Tom Brunansky to form a homerun machine that brings home the Twins’ first World Series.1991: Kirby Puckett, Kent Hrbek, and surprise star Shane Mack lead the Twins to a World Series title.2003: The Twins prove their upstart 2002 isn’t a fluke, as players like Torii Hunter, Corey Koskie, and Doug Mientkiewicz lead the Twins back to the playoffs.2009: Joe Mauer posts an MVP season to lead the Twins to a division crown.2019: A young team has emerged with some clubbing veterans, creating a juggernaut offense. Most of all, my goal to create an enjoyable experience for Twins fans and create some (healthy) debate. The 2019 Twins will have their WARs extrapolated over 162 games. While the success of the teams were based upon overall team success, not just the lineup, I picked some of the more memorable teams instead, some that may bring some nostalgia to fans in “Twins Territory.” Along with this, I decided to Baseball Reference’s Wins Above Replacement statistic (WAR) to measure the players, which is not a perfect statistic, but is a way to measure a player’s overall effectiveness at the plate, in the field, on the bases, and is balanced for different hitting environments. One example is 1996, in which the Twins had their fourth-highest OPS of all time (.782), but finished fourth in their division. LOA from MEARS (A7.5).For this exercise, I decided to cherry-pick a few lineups, as the Twins have had some seasons with strong lineups in which they did not contend for the division or the pennant. Excellent use is evident on this gamer from one of the greatest and most popular players in Minnesota baseball history. The original "twin cities" patch appears on the left shoulder. Additional tagging includes the Spalding tag and adjacent size "44" tag on the front tail. Completely original but for a team number change from 3 to 32, it retains his name "Killebrew" chain stitched in the collar and again on the front tail "Killebrew 3 44 65" denoting his uniform number, size and year of issue. This 1965 flannel road jersey dates from that season which saw Killebrew make his lone appearance in the World Series. Batting cleanup in a 1960s lineup that included Cesar Tovar, Tony Oliva, Rod Carew and Bob Allison, Killebrew provided the hammer for offensive-minded Twins teams that lost in the 1965 World Series to Los Angeles and claimed West Division titles in 1969 and '70. So were Killebrew's run-production numbers over 22 seasons, 21 of which were spent with a Minnesota Twins franchise that shifted from Washington in 1961. They usually were prodigious and memorable. A right-handed hitter with a big swing, the balding, round-faced "Killer" did not hit many line-drive home runs-most of his were towering fly balls that soared into the stands anywhere from the right-center field gap to the left field line. Harmon Killebrew 1965 Minnesota Twins Road Jersey Harmon Killebrew hit 573 career home runs, eighth on the all-time list, as he topped the 40 plateau in eight seasons and captured six American League homer titles. ![]()
